AGF (A Greener Festival), an international non-profit association, made known the 37 beneficiaries of “A Greener Festival Award” in 2019. Festivals and events (hosted by 15 countries) that embraced eco-friendly practices and adopted sustainable working methods for alleviating impacts on the environment bagged the awards. Organisations that participated in the events had demonstrated their loyalty to sustainability applications and eco-friendly practices.
Most of the establishments that took part in these award-winning events promoted and championed green practices in strategic areas such as water, power, transport, ecosystems and waste.
Festivals and events that had sent in their applications for the “A Greener Festival Award” had to effectively fulfil the parameters specified by AGF for maintaining environmental sustainability. In other words, the applicants had to offer circumstantial evidence that they were taking measures to sustain the ecological balance at the event or festival, to be eligible for the award.
AGF employees and representatives visited every applicant’s venue to meticulously assess the event or festival. The assessors also conducted post-event assessment of the festivals and visited sites to get a fair idea of their sustainability efforts and actions. The participating events took several steps that demonstrated their commitment to global environment sustainability.
A few steps that participants took involved all-embracing community reach, adoption of robust social policies, and utilisation of composting toilets. Other key efforts towards sustainability included reducing plastics use, using low carbon transportation, promoting ethically-sourced and seasonal foods, use of smart materials, and smart applications of materials. At the same time, the participants went out of the way to address and advocate the environmental challenges to the visitors.
The awards ceremony was held on 17th January 2020 in the Netherlands at Eurosonic Noorderslag. The trophies handed over to the winners were handcrafted out of recycled materials including tents recovered from event campsites and wood retrieved from construction sites. All the winners will be eligible for participating in the IGF (International Greener Festival) Awards that will be held in London on 3rd March 2020.
