April 18, 2019
The new Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) went live in central London on April 8, 2019. Mayor Sadiq Khan launched the ULEZ, the first in the world to run 24 hours all year round. The purpose of ULEZ is to reduce air pollution and improve the quality of air in the Capital. Vehicles using the ULEZ must comply with the new and stricter emission standards or pay a daily fee to use the Zone.
The primary objective of the ULEZ is to clean up London’s toxic air, which has been a prime cause for the premature deaths of several thousands of people annually. Air pollution has also been linked to several diseases including asthma, cardiovascular problems, dementia, stroke, and impaired lung development in children.
It is for this reason that the launch of ULEZ was fast-tracked by a year. The ULEZ will take the place of T-Charge (Toxicity Charge), which was being implemented earlier to reduce air pollution.
Per the T-Charge plan, older vehicles and vehicles with high emissions had to pay an extra charge for using the Congestion Charge (CC) zone.
The ULEZ has been implemented in the same region as the T-Charge, but the difference is that the ULEZ will work round-the-clock throughout the year.
Which Vehicles are Covered Under the ULEZ?
Coaches, buses, lorries, vans, motorbikes, cars and all other vehicles fall within the purview of the ULEZ. It is now mandatory for older vehicles and those emitting large amounts of toxic gases to pay the ULEZ charge.
Cars and vans with high-pollution emissions using the ULEZ are currently being charged at £12.50 per day. Pollution causing heavy-duty commercial vehicles, including coaches, buses and goods carriers are charged £100 on a daily basis.
How to Identify ULEZ Areas?
There are road signs to alert you to areas covered by the ULEZ law. These road signs have been placed at the entrance of such areas. Advance warning signs have also been placed on major roads at a distance of half a mile from the ULEZ entrance, which should help you decide whether or not to take the route.
If you are entering a ULEZ-governed area, your number plate will be automatically read by a camera. Your vehicle number will then be compared with an existing database to check its emission compliance. If your vehicle does not meet the required emission standards, you’ll have to pay the charges.
How ULEZ is Expected to Help Tackle Air Pollution?
The ULEZ aims to minimise the use of vehicles with heavy toxic emissions in the most polluted parts of the City.
With the strict ULEZ policy in place, it is expected that users of polluting vehicles will be deterred from using their vehicles in high-pollution areas. Those users will either have to change to less-polluting vehicles or avoid the ULEZ-marked area altogether.
Going for cleaner vehicle alternatives such as an electric vehicle saves money in the long run. So, the public is expected to choose this option.
Many such clean air zones are in the pipeline to improve the quality of air and thereby the health and general well-being of people throughout the UK.

The Carryway operation was run very professionally and smoothly and to a very high standard. Their knowledge and attention to detail with the complicated planning and logistics involved were exceptional; they were a pleasure to deal with and I can highly recommend their services.
It has been a delight to deal with Carryway, who were our Official Golf Buggy Supplier for The 2019 Solheim Cup. They combine efficient logistics with a professional approach to every aspect of delivery, and the equipment our event benefited from was both functional and stylish. A big thank you to a wonderful Partner.
The Carryway buggy was a lifesaver – and that’s no exaggeration! We were racing in the Aston Martin Le Mans Festival, which is a 45 mins support race just before the start for the big 24hr race. Our garages were about 2km away so getting all our gear to/from the pitlane for the race was made so simple because of the buggy! And it would have taken (the team) ages to get there and back! We are enormously proud of our new buggy and the livery made for it. It helps us stand out and helps raise our profile, not to mention being an essential team donkey.”
Thank you Carryway for supplying the buggy for us at Chatsworth this year. All went well and no issues at all – it was a definite improvement on the equipment supplied last year by a different company. Happy to use you again for next year .
Thank you for the excellent customer service that we recently received from Hugh Healy, Carryway Support. Hugh was very thorough and had excellent communications with us regarding our buggy fleet at The Westerwood Resort – nothing was too difficult for him.
Our open day event is a very important day for us, and it makes life much easier to have a relationship with a company (Carryway) that we can rely on each year.
Carryway are always a pleasure to deal with and their drivers are always friendly and professional. It takes a little bit of worry out of my job knowing that I can rely on your good service.
Many thanks to the team, especially Adam who was friendly, helpful and professional.
It is a pleasure to work with Carryway, the service and support they provide has been first class. We originally signed up for 14 brand new buggies for one year to sample working with the company.
We were pleased with the service and the product provided and have since signed up for the next few seasons and hopefully with many more to come after that.
